At 10 feet 5 inches in length, the new AE3022 Advanced Elements AdvancdFrame Ultralite has the same footprint and larger cockpit-opening as the longstanding AE1017 Sport - but at a significant weight savings.
The Advanced Elements AdvancedFrame Ultralite's hull is constructed from a lighter-weight ripstop material upper with a polyurethane tarpaulin underside. Left and right bladders are also made of a lightweight – yet rugged – polyurethane rather than PVC. Both bladder covers on the AdvancedFrame Ultralite feature open ends without a zipper, allowing the bladders to be pulled out for cleaning or replacement.Instead of the traditional low-pressure PVC floor, the AF Ultralite sports a foam floor similar to that found in the Lagoon series. To compensate, the high-backed seat features a 1.5 inch EVA closed cell foam seat base.The switch to open bladder cover, foam floor, polyurethane bladders and polyurethane tarpaulin hull provide most of the weight savings, making the AdvancedFrame Ultralite roughly 10 lbs lighter than the Sport, and nearly half the weight of the AdvancedFrame.Other features include a thin aluminum bar riser and cross bar which together provide a pitched deck, allowing water to run off. The metal stave at the front opening would not stay flat but turned sideways.Maybe not enough pressure? Only used twice last year so not sure what to do about this. Very easy to transport and paddle. I like it.
Great service from Airkayaks. I ordered on a Thursday and it arrived on Sunday. Took it to the lake the next day. My husband and I also have 2 Advanced Elements Expeditions - which we love, but I always feel bad that I need help carrying it from the car and to the water etc. So decided to try to the Ultralight. First time on the water - it was wonderfully light to load into/out of the car and easy to assemble, but the foam floor sags and makes it harder to get off the beach (need to wade out more) and there was a lot of wag while paddling. Also, you sink down into the kayak a little far, so that I (5'5'') was finding I was hitting the side panels with my hands too much while paddling. So I ordered a drop-stitch floor from Airkayaks (again, great service, it arrived just 3 days later) - and off to the lake again! YAY! Very solid feel on the bottom of the kayak, wag reduced, easier to get in and out of and was 3 inches higher up so no longer hitting my hands on the side! And with the dropstitch floor - no need to take it out prior to folding up! It added just about 3 punds to the weight, so now it's right about 20 punds - still much lighter than the other options. Now I have a kayak I can use when I feel like going out on my own as I don't need any help - and my husband is thinking of getting one too, just for the lightweight /easy carry aspect. Next year we'll plan on taking it to mountain lakes that require a bit of a hike to get to and we wouldn't easily be able to access using the Expeditions.
At first, the delivery made me disappointed. I ordered bundle package but only kayak was delivered. So that I needed to wait a week more. So that I took almost 2 weeks to get it fully delivered. The ultralite itself was just like that I expected. Tracking performance is not like hardshell but it is quite good for recreational use. I chose it for its light weight. I think it was a good choice. I can move it without much effort even with a paddle, a pump and items to be loaded. And I worried about the leg room but it was enough to me. I can even fully stretch my legs. I'm 5'7" and 160lbs
I love my new Advanced Elements Ultralite kayak! Matt at Air Kayaks was brilliant to suggest my 2 way pump- it is unbelievable easy to inflate my boat. I've taken it out on my local lake 3 times and happily turn down assistance from the lake staff, as it's so easy to top off and carry a mere 25 yards to the boat launch.
I bought this for travel. I already own a 14 ft hard shell kayak and needed something more portable so I could toss it in the back of the car when I hit the road. It is quick and easy to inflate and fun to paddle. Obviously, it doesn't track as well as my hard shell but that is to be expected. It might feel a little cramped if you are 6 ft or taller. I am 62 and have no trouble throwing it over my shoulder to walk it to the water's edge. It's eye catching and usually attracts interest when I am inflating it. Love being able to explore waterways all over the country!
